Regional Assessment of Carbon Pool Response to Intensive Silvicultural Practices in Loblolly Pine Plantations

چکیده

Tree plantations represent an important component of the global carbon (C) cycle and are expected to increase in prevalence during 21st century. We examined how silvicultural approaches that optimize economic returns loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) affected accumulation C pools vegetation, detritus, mineral soil up 100 cm across pine’s natural range southeastern United States. Comparisons treatments included competing vegetation or ‘weed’ control, fertilization, thinning, varying intensities treatment for 106 experimental 322 plots. The average age sampled was 17 years, stored (pine understory) averaged 82.1 ± 3.0 (±std. error) Mg ha?1, 14.3 0.6 ha?1 detrital (soil organic layers, coarse-woody debris, detritus). Mineral (0–100 cm) 79.8 4.6 sites. For management effects, thinning reduced by 35.5 1.2 all combinations. Weed control fertilization increased between 2.3 5.7 combinations, with high intensity applications producing greater than low (increase 21.4 1.7 ha?1). Detrital were negatively where either weed also applied, intensity. did not respond any treatments. From these data, we constructed regression models summarized detritus + response independent variables commonly monitored plantation managers (site index (SI), trees per hectare (TPH) (AGE)). on AGE both SI TPH. model explained less variance (adj. R2 = 0.29) 0.87). A general recommendation looking maximize storage would be maintain a TPH SI, manipulation having relative effect. model, predict managed achieve upper third (26.8) within our observations, planted at 1500 TPH, could accumulate ~85 12 years amount region’s pool. Notably, can using genetic silviculture technologies.

Fertilization Increases Below-ground Carbon Sequestration of Loblolly Pine Plantations

The extent of fertilization of southern pine forests is increasing rapidly; industrial fertilization increased from 16,200 ha per year in 1988, to 344,250 ha in 1998. Fertilization increases stand productivity and can increase carbon (C) sequestration by: 1) increasing above-ground standing C; 2) increasing C stored in forest products; and 3) increasing below-ground C pools. This talk will conc...

Effects of Intensive Silvicultural Treatments on Kraft Pulp Quality of Loblolly and Slash Pine

Intensive forest-management practices have been shown to greatly increase the growth rates of southern pines. A joint study was undertaken to evaluate the wood and pulp quality from fast-grown 14,year-old loblolly pine from the Piedmont and 17-year-old slash pine from the Coastal Plain. The properties were compared to 24-year-old plantation-grown controls. Three sets of chip samples, sawmill re...

High Tonnage Harvesting and Skidding for Loblolly Pine Energy Plantations

The southeastern United States has a promising source for renewable energy in the form of woody biomass. To meet the energy needs, energy plantations will likely be utilized. These plantations will contain a high density of small-stem pine trees. Since the stems are relatively small when compared with traditional product removal, the harvesting costs will increase. The purpose of this research ...
